GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The Hamas movement is preparing to announce its new charter in the coming days, as well as the new head of Hamas’ politburo, to replace Khalid Meshaal who currently leads the organization.

After a copy of the charter was leaked at the beginning of April, Hamas sources told Ma’an on Wednesday that it would be officially announced from the Qatari capital Doha next week, while Meshaal’s replacement will be announced the following week.

An official statement on Hamas’ website confirmed Meshaal is due to hold a conference on May 1 in Doha, where the exiled leader holds residence, to officially announce the new political charter.

The conference, the statement said, is to be attended by “an elite group of writers, researchers, and journalists.”

Meanwhile, the anonymous sources added that while the new leader had not yet been elected, Hamas' internal elections for all other leadership positions in the Gaza Strip, occupied West Bank, inside Israeli prisons, and abroad had been completed.

Deputy head of Hamas’ politburo Ismail Haniyeh is currently acting as president, with sources saying that Hamas leadership agrees that Haniyeh should take over from Meshaal as leader of the party.

Hamas typically carries out internal elections every four years, to determined leadership and administration committees on all levels, including electing the members of head of the movement's politburo. Yahya Sinwar was notably elected as the head of the party’s politburo in the Gaza Strip in February.
