Tens of children from the Jerusalem neighborhoods of Silwan and Issawiya demonstrated this Friday morning along the sections of the routes of the international Jerusalem Marathon held for the 5th time in the occupied city of Jerusalem.
The children held placards that read "Welcome to Palestine" and donned t-shirts with the slogan, "Stop! Think Twice! You are participating in a political event, not a sports marathon! You are in occupied Jerusalem on Palestinian land.". They also wore shirts with Mahmoud Abbas the Palestinian president's face printed on.
It was reported that the Israeli police surrounded the place and prevented the Palestinian children from coming close to the route or socializing with the participant runners.
The police started its security patrol since 5 a.m. when it closed the roads involved in the marathon which disrupted the traffic and the flow of the Muslim worshipers who were headed to Al-Aqsa mosque to perform the Friday prayers.
One of the children participating in the demonstration said that he decided to participate to tell the world that Jerusalem is a Palestinian, Arabic, Islamic, and Christian place that has been under occupation for 48 years.
The International Israeli Marathon kicked off in Jerusalem city this morning amid Palestinian criticism and protests because the marathon is used as a mean to serve the Israeli narration about the history and religious landmarks of Jerusalem.
