| Jerusalem / PNN – A Fateh official is still banned from nearing the solidarity tent in Sheikh Jarrah, having been given a 15-day sentence. Other Palestinians were released after being arrested last week while trying to protect a home in the East Jerusalem neighborhood. Dozens of settlers had invaded a home in Sheikh Jarrah, attacking local and international activists with the help of the police and army. During the clash last Sunday afternoon several people were arrested, including senior Fateh member Hatem Abdel Qader. Both Palestinians and their foreign supporters were detained for attempting to prevent settlers from entering the home and reporters were forcibly prevented from filming the incident. The seized house had been subject to legal dispute for more than ten years. Both the owner, Darwish Hijazi, and the settlers have papers claiming that the house is legally theirs. Hijazi and Abdel-Qader both hold that the settlers’ papers are forged. The case is ongoing, but on Sunday the settlers abandoned legal procedure and seized the house by force. Dmitri Dilani, a Fateh spokesman in Jerusalem, called the attack “state terrorism” and insisted that both Fateh and the people of Sheikh Jarrah will continue to resist settlement in their community. Fatima Salem, whose house was also threatened during the incident, spoke of her family’s shock at finding their home surrounded by armed police and settlers. Several of her family members were attacked when they asked police what was happening. “There have been several attempts in the past to steal this land,” said Fatima, whose family have owned the home since before 1948 and have legal proof of this. The people of the area have accused the settlers of taking homes in the area in order to create conflict in the neighborhood and force residents to leave. Settlers have already occupied several homes in the area, and many families in Sheikh Jarrah live under threat of eviction and home demolition. The occupying administration intends that the neighborhood will eventually be razed to make way for a new settlement. | ||||
