Gaza / PNN – Fateh Central Committee member Zacharia Al Agha said on Saturday evening that the security organs of the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip have banned the activities of his movement “on an informal basis.”
Hamas spokesman Ayman Taha was reported as approving the withdrawal of mobile phones from members of Fateh in the Gaza Strip. This move would be to prevent them from participating in the Sixth Conference underway in Bethlehem, but particularly in not being part of the elections to the Central Committee and the Revolutionary Council. The Palestinian Authority security bodies also ban Hamas gatherings in the West Bank.
Al Agha said Saturday night that Fateh party offices are closed throughout the Gaza Strip with all activities banned, but that an official list of those banned activities was not forthcoming.
Another Fateh member said that the Hamas security services had approached a number of members on Saturday and warned them that the exercise of any activity regarding Fateh was prohibited.
Several prominent members of the Fateh party in the Gaza Strip do want to run in the elections and were nominated, among them being Zacharia Al Agha, Ibrahim Abul-Naga, Abdul-Rahman Hamad, Ahmed Nasr, Ahmed Helles and Samih Nasr.
The Hamas government banned the travel of members of Fateh to the Sixth Conference in the West Bank’s Bethlehem after its request for a trade was rejected. Hamas had asked that the Palestinian Authority release Hamas members from West Bank jails. In exchange it would facilitate the travel of Fateh members out the Rafah crossing, through Egypt and Jordan, and into the West Bank, as they are banned from passing through Israeli territory.
The PA rejected the request to release Hamas members from its jails and instead continued its campaign of arrests.
Because of the problem with the participation of Fateh members in the Gaza Strip, the Sixth Conference in the West Bank's Bethlehem will be extended through Tuesday in hopes of finding a solution.
“It is unacceptable to hold elections without our brothers in Gaza being able to run or vote,” a conference attendee said in Bethlehem. Meanwhile, another Fateh member in Gaza said that warnings were issued by Hamas security against leaving the house.
At the same time, from conference headquarters at Bethlehem's Terra Santa School, President Abbas issued a statement geared toward reconciliation with Farouk Qaddumi, the Fateh member and PLO executive who alleged Abbas' involvement in the death of the late President Yasser Arafat.
