| PNN - Screenings of the musical documentary “Checkpoint Rock” begin tomorrow in Ramallah. The tour starts at the Casbah in the central West Bank city on Wednesday before moving on to the cities of Haifa, Akka and Nazareth within Israeli boundaries. Film producer, singer and musician, Fermin Muuruza, and documentarian Javier Corcuera spent five long years on the project. Documenting Palestinian reality with distinctive music is a unique endeavor, they say, challenging people through creativity and music. Artists from different regions of Palestine are involved, including Habib Al Deek and Muthana Sha'baan, among others. The film, and the reality it shows, was shot through a tour of cities, villages and refugee camps. Social and political barriers are broken by the project, in line some say, with the late great poet, Mahmoud Darwish. Of the film’s co-directors, Muguruza is a prominent singer and music producer of his native Spain, as well as in other parts of Europe and South America. Of his most known songs is “Elleh Elleh Ramallah,” inspired by the invasions of 2002. The director was among a group of artists inside the presidential headquarters, Al Muqata, when the late President Yasser Arafat was under heavy siege. Co-director Javier Corcuera is among Europe’s important documentary filmmakers where he has earned numerous awards. "Checkpoint Rock" is touring nineteenth through the twenty-fourth of this month. |
