| Bil’in / Iyad Burnat – This week the children of western Ramallah’s Bil’in demonstrated against the night raids that are keeping them awake. Boys and adults in the village are being taken, organizers of the nonviolent resistance movement say, to prevent their participation in the weekly demonstrations that have made the village known throughout the world. During Wednesday’s demonstration the kids of the town carried banners and chanted slogans like "We want to sleep", "No more night raids", "Let us live", and "We want Peace". The children lead the demonstration toward the Wall with Palestinian adults and foreign supporters following them. At the Wall they were met by only two soldiers, those who were on regular duty at the Wall. Kids were chanting in front of the fence that serves as the Wall in this area when two more military jeeps arrived. Noticing that the gate, which leads to the green line and gives access to the Wall, was open, five soldiers came through the gate to close it while the children continued to chant against the arrests of children. They asked whether they were ever thinking about what they were doing. Seeing a sea of children, Israeli forces did not open fire. Children placed their flags and posters at the gate and went home. The next night Bil'in was again disrupted by a raid ending with the arrest of one man. The house of 50 year old Mohammed Abu Rahma was invaded shortly before 2:00 am on Thursday morning, 20.08.09, ending in his arrest. His 14 year old son Nashmi Mohammed Abu Rahma had been arrested 5 days ago. About 25 soldiers stormed the village on foot with their faces disguised. While taking the victim away, the soldiers threw a sound bomb into Palestinian and international activists who tried to interfere and de-arrest the man. A shuffle occurred during which the soldiers hit Palestinians and international activists, knocking one international female activist to the ground and pulling the hair of another. As the cameraman was filming the arrest, one soldier hit and broke his camera. The occupation forces succeeded in taking the victim away escaping through the fields, closely followed by Palestinian and international activists. Jeeps were waiting at a fair distance and picked up the soldiers with their victim. Organizers of the local nonviolent resistance say that in spite of continuing arrests, the resistance and demonstrations against occupation and the Wall will continue. “This is our right and we want our lands back now, not tomorrow.” |
