| Unfair distribution, poor quality and quantity, is part of water discussion in UNDP |

| Bethlehem / PNN – Water continues to be a major issue in the Middle East, long known to be the most valuable regional commodity, far more scarce and in demand that oil. The Israeli administration planned the route of the Wall in the West Bank based on water resources. It is known there that Israeli settlers used several times more water than do Palestinians in the West Bank. The United Nations Development Program warned this week of the water problem in the Middle East. It called for immediate action during a meeting held as part of World Water Week in Stockholm. The Administrator in Iraq, in charge of the initiative, Paolo Lembo, said in a statement that "the most important strategic resource in the Middle East and neighboring countries rather than oil or gas, is water." For three successive years there remains a water crisis in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, for example, while the quality of running water in the Gaza Strip is so poor, many families buy from the water truck for teeth brushing. He continued, "With the growing population and scarcity of water, and its deteriorating quality due to climate change, millions of people have felt the heat on the ground." Lembo said global warming, “arrived in the Middle East and now is not the time to develop plans or strategies for the development of the future. We must act now,” he said, “and not during the 10 or 15 years.” The meeting was attended by thirty representatives and experts from ten countries in the Middle East. Unfair distribution of water, poor quality and limited supplies is not a Palestinian issue only, but is one that has the attention of the United Nations. |
