Terrified Paintings?! Traditional dance mixes with modern dance and theatre

Bethlehem / PNN – Palestinian events have a common thread; that is they often involve debkeh.

The traditional dance is a breakout move at weddings, is performed by children at events throughout the country, and is the stuff of local dance troupes.

At Dar Annadwa this week the traditional Palestinian folklore dance is being mixed into a theatrical dance. By combining the old style with modern dance and theatre, the Diyar Theatre will present “Terrified Paintings.”

About 35 male and female dancers will take the stage at 7:00 pm Friday at the Ad-Dar Theatre inside the International Center of Bethlehem/Dar Annadwa.

The dancers say they “believe that art in its various forms is a tool for liberation, and for changing the society for the better.”

They also consider the Dabkeh to be a tool to revive the Palestinian heritage that was inherited from their ancestors.
