| Jerusalem / Maisa Abu Ghazaleh for PNN - “Steadfast in Jerusalem” began last week with the pledge it would become a weekly event. All rallied around the Ghaoui family solidarity tent, one of many expelled from their homes and replaced by settlers. This Ramadan evening was dedicated to the people of the neighborhood, their steadfastness, and the support they deserve. Slogans were chanted and written on signs in Arabic, Hebrew and English, reading “Jerusalem is steadfast, settlers go home” and “Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood is in danger, return its freedom.” There were many sentiments against occupation and settlement policy. During the Ramadan evening the Israeli police threatened the arrest of Nasser Ghaoui, one of the citizens forcibly evicted from his home. The crowd refused to back down and instead continued to give speeches in the street. He continued, “The message to the world is clear. Jerusalemites need urgent protection against attacks by the Israeli government, and first and foremost when it comes to settlement.” Al Robi added his call to maintain the solidarity marches and evenings so that the occupying Israeli administration understands that the citizens of the city intend to maintain their presence. Khalil Hanoun is one of the evicted homeowners. He said, “We are delighted to see these crowds in solidarity with our family and the Ghaoui family. We need the continued moral and psychological support.” |
