| Ramallah / PNN – The Israeli administration is looking for ways to excuse its ongoing illegal settlement policy in the face of international scrutiny, says Musfata Barghouthi. The parliamentarian and head of the Palestinian National Initiative said on Tuesday that a danger resounds from Israeli efforts to freeze settlements at a rate of 2,500 units beyond the current annual rate. Dr. Barghouthi said during a press conference held in Ramallah that the danger lays also in that a temporary freeze of three to nine months does not even include the city of Jerusalem. “This makes the idea of a settlement freeze one without substance.” The second portion of the Road Map provides for a full settlement freeze in accordance with the original Mitchell report, which includes natural growth. The expected settlement freeze, and the removal of what is there, remains all of that which is within the 1967 borders including the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Barghouthi said today, “There cannot be an independent Palestinian state in the presence of settlement.” An additional call was issued for international sanctions against the Israelis for unabated settlement policy. |
