Nonviolent resistance holds own in Na'lin during demonstration that ends with 3 severe injuries

Na'lin / PNN - Hundreds of residents of the western Ramallah town of Na'lin held Friday prayers on their land near the Wall.

Sheikh Murad Amira led prayers which he referred to as a form of resistance to occupation and a rejection of injustice.

International supporters joined the Palestinian nonviolent activists in the weekly action in walking toward the concrete Wall that is replacing the chain link begun three years ago.

Hundreds of dunams of olive groves have been destroyed and agricultural crops have burned in the sun with farmers unable to reach them.

Youth flew Palestinian flags on Friday toward the columns of sniper towers in the Wall that reach some 12 meters. Palestinian land owners demand justice, but that weekly call has fallen on deaf ears.

Despite a presence of activists from Canada, Sweden, Spain, the US and Italy this week, and the advisory opinion rendered by the International Court of Justice against the Wall, the Israelis have turned a blind eye and continue with the policy that is overtaking the West Bank.

On Friday Israeli forces fired dozens of gas canisters, including 34 at the same time, while also shooting contaminated liquid onto the demonstrators. With gas clouds and many people choking on the ground, Israeli soldiers then began firing live bullets. Photographer Hamoud Amira is among three people injured from the shooting.

The leader of the National Initiative, Salah Al Khawaja,  and a member of the Na'lin resistance against the Wall, said, “This national strategy of the Popular Resistance must be placed in the Palestinian national struggle and we appeal to all forces, organizations and committees to activate and strengthen the popular resistance. We are restoring the first Intifada, the model of resistance that must be involved to open field for all Palestinians.”

After the demonstration Israeli forces imposed an additional checkpoint leaving the town.
