PNI leader Mustafa Barghouthi [MaanImages]Ramallah – Ma’an – The Palestinian National Initiative (PNI) described the Egyptian proposal for Palestinian unity as positive and constructive according to a statement delivered Saturday.
PNI welcomed the articles of the proposal saying they will help end the internal division among Palestinians.
The party indicated it was in favor of holding Presidential and legislative elections simultaneously in all of the Palestinian territories, and did not specifically reject the idea of holding the elections after 25 January 2010, which all other responding parties have so far done. The PNI also supported the Egyptian proposal for restructuring the Palestinian security departments using Egyptian and Arab forces to oversee the process.
PNI also called for an end to the mutual media campaigns being waged by the de facto Hamas government in Gaza, and the Fatah dominated West Bank regime, a release of all political prisoners being held by both governments, and a revitalization of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) according to the Cairo agreement.
It also praised Egypt in its role as a mediator, and its efforts toward ending the division.
