Six and a half million member British labor federation, TUC, adopts policy for boycott and sanctions

Bethlehem / PNN - At yesterday’s Trades Union Congress in Liverpool the vote came in to support a full boycott of agricultural products coming from Israeli settlements.

The six and a half million member labor federation adopted a policy calling for a boycott and sanctions campaign.

The debate at the TUC caused much argument among union leaders as the Israeli lobby is influential, however organizers of the British popular movement in support of Palestine say that the war on Gaza generated renewed anger. “The rise in active support in the Trades Union Movement, for the Palestinian people, is becoming more vocal and proactive”, wrote the UK’s Neil Garratt to PNN when the decision came in.

The TUC decision on Thursday was the culmination of motions passed by various unions throughout the year. British unions became increasingly outraged by the major Israeli attacks on Gaza in late December and January. The TUC vote is another step, say organizers, in a massive boycott of Israeli goods. The motion also calls for divestment and for the TUC General Council to pressure the British government into ending the arms trade with the Israelis, and to suspend the European Union trade agreement.

The policy statement reads in part: “The TUC calls on the British Government to seek EU agreement to impose a ban on the importing of goods produced in the illegal settlements and support moves to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement which provides preferential trade facilities to Israel”.
