Bethlehem - Ma'an/Agencies - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supports his country's policy of building in occupied Palestinian territory and views settlers as brothers, his spokesman explained on Monday.

"He [Netanyahu] sees the settlements in Judea and Samaria [the West Bank] as a Zionist enterprise and the settlers in Judea and Samaria as his - our - brothers," the prime minister's spokesman, Nir Hafetz, insisted in an interview with Army Radio on Monday.

"There are some politicians... who see halting building or ceding national territory or harming the settlements in Judea and Samaria as an asset, something that can help Israel," Hefetz added. "Prime Minister Netanyahu cannot be counted among those people."

In fact, according to his spokesman, Netanyahu will not ever stop expanding the West Bank structures. "You have never heard the prime minister say he would freeze settlement building. The opposite is true."

Palestinians and generally the rest of the international community view the Israeli government policy as illegal or illegitimate. World leaders have reiterated their opposition in recent months since peace negotiations collapsed during Israel's assault on Gaza last winter.
