| New York / PNN - President Mahmoud Abbas said in New York after the meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Barack Obama that the Israelis must implement obligations, in particular ceasing all forms of settlement activity, including so-called natural growth. At the same time, the Israeli press reported today that a new settlement is being built on the outskirts of the Beitar Illit Settlement in southern Jerusalem. He also called for an end to occupation of lands within the 1967 boundaries, which includes the Dead Sea and Jordan Valley, as a reference point for negotiations. During his remarks after Tuesday’s meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, President Abbas said, “Today we came to New York at the invitation of President Obama…”, explaining that the invitation was accepted “out of respect for the President and his tireless efforts towards the Palestinian people in all areas.” President Abbas took heat from several parties, including the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Palestinian People’s Party for meeting with Netanyahu before the Israelis stopped settlement activity. Abbas continued to say in New York that the Palestinians have fulfilled their obligations under the Road Map, and remain committed to continuing. “On the other hand,” he demanded and stressed “the need for the Israeli side to implement its obligations and in particular to cease all forms of settlement activity including natural growth.” He said that the US administration would explore both the Palestinian and Israeli positions in the coming weeks in order to help resume negotiations. |
