Khaled implores US to not fall into Israeli trap of politicizing UNHRC report in order to negate it

29.09.09 - 11:21

Nablus / PNN - Head of Expatriates Affairs in the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Khaled, said today that the “Goldstone Report” provides sufficient evidence to prosecute Israelis as war criminals.

Referring to the United Nations Human Rights Council whose fact-finding mission was led by Justice Richard Goldstone, Khaled said that it became clear to any dissenters that the Israelis committed a serious of violations including at the level of war crimes. With the additional possibility of crimes against humanity under international law, in particular the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, and international humanitarian law, Khaled said today that the Security Council must prepare indictments to submit to the International Criminal Court.

The Israeli government continues to disparage the report, Justice Goldstone, and the United Nations. However, Goldstone himself is a believer in Zionism and a Jew. His daughter commented to the press that had it not been him, the findings would have been much stronger.

Khaled, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, said that international bodies such as the Security Council are beholden to shoulder their responsibility in prosecuting those responsible for the three-weeks of Israeli attacks carried out during late December and into January.

The Human Rights Council of the United Nations showed a sufficient degree of clarity in its position of the recommendation for prosecution, noted Khaled, which called on the UN Security Council to use its power under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations of 1945 to commit the Israelis to a transparent probe into this international crime which killed more than 1,450 Palestinians and injured at least 4,500, more than a third of whom were women and children.

People’s homes were destroyed, either fully or partially, as were media offices, shops and facilities. Public and private institutions were devastated, as was the infrastructure of the Gaza Strip, including water, sewage, roads and electricity. Even the United Nations Relief and Works Agency was not spared for targeting, nor were schools and hospitals.

The UN report outlines the Israeli use of Palestinians as human shields, which in itself is sufficient to issue indictments for crimes against humanity, along with the targeting of civilians while waving white flags.

At the conclusion of Khaled’s statement he called on international parties, particularly the United States, to not fall into the Israeli trap of attempting to politicize the report in order to negate it. Judge Richard Goldstone has a long line of work that he has done with integrity and impartiality, including in Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
