| Future success of Fateh to be found in election results at Sixth General Conference |
| 07.08.09 - 11:37 | |
| Both branches of the Fateh movement are important to its governance and members are jockeying for position. Sources in Bethlehem said that they did not expect elections to be held today, and instead an extension was coming. An outstanding issue for elections is that of the members of Fateh who are stuck in the Gaza Strip, unable to travel to the West Bank for the conference. Tonight will see the completion of hearing committee reports completed during the conference, while recommendations and decisions will be presented towards the end. A Former minister in the Fateh movement, Abu Sofian, told PNN that the possibilities are significant for the success of the conference. He said that the measure of success will come with the knowledge of who will be elected to lead the movement in the next phase. Discord within the party itself is intense, so much so that hundreds were not invited, including some prominent members of the PLO from the Diaspora and major names in the armed resistance, including Zacharia Zbeidi. However, party official Abu Zaida said, "There is no political disagreement within the Fateh movement. The fundamentals are there, but we are experiencing a leadership conference.” He said, “There will be new faces after the elections, but there will be no change in the political line of the movement with respect to negotiations with the Israelis.” With the Hamas – Fateh struggle ongoing, members of Fateh in the Gaza Strip are sitting on the shelves, unable to attend the conference. Abu Zaida said that because of Hamas’ role in preventing some 400 Fateh members from attending from Gaza, divisions are being strengthened. |
