PLO: Israelis get US agreement to normalize relations with Arabs and get green light for settlements
04.09.09 - 15:05
Nablus / PNN – Taysir Khaled of the PLO noted today that US President Barack Obama is seeking, through his mediator, to arrange a meeting between President Abbas and the Israeli Prime Minister on the sidelines of the UN.
The tripartite meeting is being arranged by US envoy George Mitchell and will be held at the end of this month at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Khaled, who is the Chairman of the Department of Expatriates Affairs in the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and a member of the Political Bureau of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, said that the US position has weakened greatly.
The agreement that Mitchell has elaborated clearly reflects the decline in the US position that Obama had expressed on more than one occasion, said Khaled today. The leftist remembered the words of the US President during his first speech at University of Cairo. At that time Obama called on the Israelis to completely halt all settlement activities on the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, and to respect international obligations, including those set forth by the Road Map. But now the meeting that Mitchell is arranging on behalf of Obama is for a temporary and partial settlement freeze only, and it does not include East Jerusalem settlements.
The agreement may include stopping the demolition of Palestinian houses in East Jerusalem while building another 2,500 units for settlers in the West Bank. By agreeing to a partial, temporary settlement freeze, regular Israeli settlement policy becomes acceptable as soon as the period of six months is up.
Current Israeli policy, with or without the US agreement, precludes the issue of Jerusalem and the refugee issue in any future negotiations. The Israelis clearly are using their influence on the US, Khaled said Friday, in order to force a normalization of relations with Arab countries and to get a green light to continue the same settlement policy that ensures a contiguous Palestinian state is impossible.
The PLO official said that the organization rejects any agreement that does not adhere to international law.
