Palestinian official: high time for international community to seriously pressure Israelis

Ramallah / PNN – Presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh said last night that the coming weeks are crucial for that is still referred to by many as the “peace process.”

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has made it clear by both deed and action that he is not going to abide international law, Palestinian diplomacy and the nonviolent resistance movement, or the US administration.

The international community and the US administration are pressuring the Israelis to abide by international legitimacy, the Arab peace initiative and the initiative of President Obama. “Without this, said Abu Rudeineh, “the region will fall into an increased cycle of instability.”

The question is being asked, as it has for years, why the US and international community continue to call for negotiations while financing the Israelis. The call from others is for full sanctions.

The presidential spokesperson said today that in order for the new Obama administration to maintain its credibility in the region, it must place actual pressure on the Israeli administration to abide international law.

Abu Rudeineh told reporters in Ramallah reiterated that with all of the Israeli defiance to international law, what has tipped the scales is settlement policy.

The Israelis are expanding settlements, all of which are illegal under international law and United Nations resolutions.

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called today on the Israelis to cease settlement expansion, while the position seems milk-toast to many as there are dozens of long-standing UN resolutions deeming all settlements illegal.

The Israelis continue to dismiss Palestinian and Arab discontent over settlements, yet are using the issue to trade for favors, including normalization, air-space and business.

President Abbas may or may not meet with the Israeli Prime Minister and US President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly later this month. Details are expected upon the next arrival of US envoy George Mitchell.

Palestinian officials will meet after news from the US to decide their next move.
