Nonviolent demonstrators in Bil’in protest Wall this week by holding banners reading: We Want Peace

Bil’in / Iyad Burnat – Residents of the small western Ramallah town of Bil’in were joined today by international activists for their weekly nonviolent demonstration against the Wall, settlements and occupation.

Despite being inundated by noxious gas canisters, protesters stood their ground near the fence that blocks residents from their land.

Palestinians displayed large banners reading "We Want Peace" in Arabic, Hebrew, and English. Demonstrators chanted for justice.

Injuries were minor, including one demonstrator in a wheelchair who was heavily gassed while another person suffered from skin burns from the gas.

Some in the crowd succeeded in pulling open the barbed wire of the inner gate and passing through it toward the Wall. Half a dozen soldiers charged, ready to make arrests. However, other Israeli forces continued to fire gas which drove back the soldiers.

As the demonstrators returned to the center of the village, Israeli forces heavily gassed the house closest to the Wall where a Palestinian man was sitting and watching the unfolding event.

In spite of the army's violent response to these nonviolent protests and the ongoing intimidating night raids in Bil'in, the weekly demonstration continues to be held without fail. The sense of resistance to the military occupation is deeply ingrained in the people of this village. They have been resisting since the construction of the Wall five years ago, and they are determined to continue their struggle in spite of all odds.
