Gaza/Bethlehem – Ma’an – Israeli forces shelled the northern Gaza Strip on Monday evening, causing no casualties, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials.
The Israeli military spokesperson’s office said that warplanes identified and targeted a “rocket launcher” in the area. The spokesperson also said that the target was hit. No Palestinians were believed to be in the area at the time, and no casualties were reported.
Muawiya Hassanein, the director of Emergency Services in the Health Ministry in Gaza, said that Israeli artillery had shelled northern Gaza, but no casualties resulted.
The incident was the latest in a series of renewed cross border incidents. An Israeli airstrike that killed three Islamic Jihad fighters in northern Gaza on Friday has raised concerns that a nine-month-old ceasefire could be on the brink of collapse.
According to Israel, two homemade projectiles and a mortar shell were fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip on Monday.
As reported by Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, the first two projectiles landed in the Sdot Negev Regional Council. The mortar landed in the Eshkol Regional Council. No damage or injuries were reported.
Earlier, the National Resistance Committees, the armed wing of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, claimed responsibility for firing shells at an Israeli military jeep east of Al-Maghazi Refugee Camp. It was not clear if this was connected to the Israeli reports of shelling.
According to the newspaper, a mortar shell was also fired on Sunday, also causing no damage. The Israeli military reportedly returned fire into Gaza.
Earlier on Monday, two Palestinian teenagers were reported injured by shelling from an Israeli tank near Al-Maghazi Refugee Camp in the central Gaza Strip
Sources in Gaza also reported Israeli shelling in the northern Gaza Strip on Sunday night. No injuries were reported.
