RAMALLAH, April 27, 2017 (WAFA) – Palestinians across the West Bank and the Gaza Strip observed since Thursday morning a general strike in support of the approximately 1,800 hunger striking prisoners and detainees in Israeli jails.
Public and private institutions, including schools and universities, shops, transportation and other facilities were all shut down, with the exclusion of health services and secondary school examination students.
Meanwhile, the Union of Transport announced that Thursday will be a day of general strike in all the districts of the West Bank and Gaza.
About 1,800 Palestinian detainees have joined the hunger strike, and the number is expected to rise as more detainees are joining the strike. The hunger strikers are demanding better conditions, more contact with relatives, and an end to Israel’s practice of detention without charge or trial.
The media committee of the strike said Tuesday that the health conditions of most of the strikers are deteriorating and the Israel Prison Service moved some of them to the prison clinic.
