NAZARETH, January 19, 2017 (WAFA) –The Arabs in Israel observed Thursday a day of mourning and a general strike to protest demolition of homes in the Arab village of Umm al-Hiran in the Naqab desert and police killing of Yacoub Abu al-Qeean during protests in the village on Wednesday, according to Arabs 48 website.
It said Arab students did not attend school as a general strike was observed in all Arab towns in Israel.
The Higher Arab Steering Committee held an emergency meeting in Umm al-Rihan on Wednesday and called for the general strike and day of mourning to protest the demolitions and the killing of Abu al-Qeean, who was shot dead by Israeli police during the protests in the village against the demolition of the Arab homes in order to build a Jewish settlement.
The committee decided on other protest steps including a demonstration in Ara in central Israel on Saturday against what it described as “the crime of the Israeli authorities in Umm al-Rihan.”
