Palestinians in Spain: everything we do is to resist occupation, to resist forgetting

Hiba Lama for PNN – In a hotel in Spain, Arabic writing is splayed across the glass. The owner is Ghaleb Jaber, among the Palestinians who was outside in 1967 and found himself banned from returning.

Like many of the displaced, Jaber can still recall every detail of his home city of Nablus: his grandmother, the bread, the stone wall around his house, the olive garden, his mother’s dress, the smell of his father’s tobacco.

In the entrance way of the hotel is a model of his village in southern Nablus, surrounded by a fountain of fresh water.

A map of historic Palestine is painted nearby. History is being asserted here in memory and honor, and also to counter the Israeli propaganda of “a people without a land for a land without a people” that is espoused by those wishing to install legitimacy to the myth of a Jewish right to Palestine.

The furniture in the hotel is engraved, with old ceramic on display. This is an Arab oasis, seeming far removed from Spain.

On the menu are falafel and hummus, spicy sides and pickles, tabbouleh and pastry. For Ramadan, Jaber hosted a breakfast that could have been hosted in the West Bank city that he comes from.

He said that everything we do is to resist occupation, to resist forgetting. “All of us find our own means to resist. And I am sure that within 30 years will witness the demise of Israel and the return of Palestine if we act rationally, and stop the stupidity and being dragged behind emotions and division.”

Jaber added that his hotel may not be for everyone. “If he does not like my Arabic writing and the Palestinian flag and Arab food, he does not have to enter the hotel”, but that it is crucial to combat being a “human being stripped of history, heritage and home, family and assets.”
