NABLUS, October 17, 2011 (WAFA) – A recent poll conducted by An-Najah National University Monday showed that 77% of Palestinians believe the Palestinian application for statehood membership to the United Nations is a good move and serves the Palestinian cause, compared to 19.1% who believe otherwise.
The PLO applied to the Security Council, in September, for full UN membership of a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital. The Security Council is studying the request to vote on it, while the US has threatened to veto the application.
The survey was carried out between October 13 and 15, on a random sample of 1361 Palestinians over the age of 18 from both sexes with the right to vote: 861 in the West Bank and 500 in the Gaza Strip.
According to the An-Najah poll, 56.2% of those surveyed believe the UN bid will positively affect the Palestinian cause, compared with 17.6% who believe it will affect the cause negatively.
The results showed that 73% believe the PLO and the Palestinian Authority held a good diplomatic campaign when applying for UN recognition, and 45.5% believe the Security Council vote will support the bid.
Moreover, 82.6% of Palestinians surveyed consider US threats to veto the Palestinian application as American encouragement of Israeli policies in the Palestinian Territory, with 67.1% believing the US will veto the request.
In addition, 40.6% of Palestinians believe that UN recognition of a Palestinian state will positively affect negotiations on the issue of Jerusalem, compared to 32.5% who believe it will affect it negatively.
